When translated into English, the Aztecs and Mazatecs called psilocybin mushrooms genius mushrooms, divinatory mushrooms, and marvelous mushrooms. When Bernardino de Sahagn visited Central America during Hernán Cortés’ expedition, he described the ritual use of teonanácatl by the Aztecs.

Following the Spanish conquest, Catholic missionaries waged a campaign against Aztec culture, portraying them as idolaters.
